SpaceMonger - What's New in 2.1

So you've used SpaceMonger before? Version 2.1 has a whole host of new features, but still has the same fresh lemony scent you know and love. It can still scan your disks and tell you how much space things are taking up, but version 2.1 contains so much, much more than the 1.x versions you're likely used to.

If you're used to version 1.x and are a little lost in version 2.1, you may want to try the Introduction for New Users.

A complete list of changes is shown below, dating back to the very beginning of SpaceMonger:

Version 2.1 - August 15, 2006

  • Brand-new scanner and renderer code.
  • Built on the Wink framework, which provides UI widgets, system code, threading tools, OS isolation and portability, XML parsing, HTML rendering, and a ton of other features.
  • New UI, with new layout, that looks similar to the v2.0 layout, but is built on the Wink UI widgets.
  • Fully internationalizable and translatable; includes 10 language translations upon release.
  • Includes alternate visualizations, including data tables, a histogram, and a pie chart.
  • Hundreds of new customization options in the Setup dialog.
  • Full Unicode support throughout.
  • "Find" bar that can search for files in the scan.
  • Better shell integration, including the ability to open folders and disks from the Explorer in SpaceMonger and the ability to open files and programs via SpaceMonger. The "Tools" menu allows access to common Windows configuration areas.
  • Full documentation, including user manual.
  • A point-and-click Windows-friendly installer (NSIS).
  • More accurate disk-scanning.
  • Basic network-drive support.
  • Ability to scan non-disk paths.
  • Favorites list for common scan targets.
  • Five different treemap layouts, including the classic "cluster size" treemap.
  • On-the-fly scanner and updater allows you to use the program while it's scanning.
  • Ability to hide files from the display.
  • Ability to copy and move files, not just delete them.
  • Ability to rescan portions of the scanned data without rescanning all of it.
  • Multiple-file selection and the selection list, which can be used to efficently manage the selected files.
  • User-interface can switch between "simple mode", which looks a lot like the old 1.x interface, and "enhanced mode", which contains all the new features.
  • Tested on all major current Windows versions: Windows 95 (OSR 1/2), 98 (FE/SE), ME, 2000, XP, and Server 2003.
