While the display is pretty and informative, it wouldn't be
terribly useful if that was all it could do. Select the arrow
tool and then use it to click on a folder or file. Notice how
the file highlights (well, dark-lights) in black? That indicates
that the file (or folder) is selected.

You can use all the typical selection tools you're used to when selecting files. Clicking selects a file; shift-clicking (holding down the Shift key while you click the mouse button) lets you select multiple files; and control-clicking (with the Control or Ctrl key) lets you both add and remove files from the selection.
